What is Tamworth's new local plan?

Work is currently underway to produce a new local plan for Tamworth. This is an important document that will set out how development is going to take place across the borough until 2043. It will play a key role in the future of Tamworth, guiding decisions on things like:

  • Our new developments, including where new homes and businesses are going to be built
  • Our local services and facilities, including our town centre and the smaller neighbourhood centres
  • Our infrastructure like roads and schools, including making sure we have what we need in the future
  • Our community spaces, including our green areas, heritage, leisure facilities, and places to enjoy
  • Our local environment, including climate change, flooding, biodiversity, and our green belt
  • Our planning applications, including whether new developments should be allowed or not

Why is it so important to get involved?

The new local plan will affect key decisions about your neighbourhood, where you live, work, spend your leisure time, and your experiences travelling to these places. It will also make a big difference in how we tackle some of the big challenges facing Tamworth.

Getting involved in the local plan is your chance to shape Tamworth's future.

We would like to receive input from as many people as possible, so that the new local plan really reflects the needs and aspirations of our whole community. A variety of engagement activities covering different topic areas will be posted over the coming months, so please check back regularly or sign up for updates to be able to have your say.

A Regulation 19 Local Plan is the pre-submission version of a Local Plan that is published by a local planning authority for formal public consultation before it is submitted for independent examination. At this stage, the Plan is considered to be the authority's final draft and consultees are invited to make representations on whether it is legally compliant, sound, and has been prepared in accordance with the relevant statutory requirements.

Following the Regulation 19 consultation, the Local Plan, together with any representations received, is submitted to the Secretary of State for examination by an independent Planning Inspector. The Inspector then assesses whether the Plan meets legal and soundness requirements before it can be adopted.

How does this relate to Tamworth?

Tamworth Borough Council has now prepared its draft Local Plan for submission in December 2026. From Monday 24 August, the Plan will be available for public consultation for a period of six weeks. During this consultation stage, members of the public and other interested parties will have the opportunity to submit comments on the Plan, including whether it is legally compliant, sound, and prepared in accordance with the relevant statutory requirements.
