An introduction to Tamworth's heritage
Although Tamworth has expanded significantly during the 20th century, elements of the town's historic edieval core still survive including the castle, market place, and the line of the Anglo-Saxon and medieval street pattern. Many of these monuments are designated as being of national importance and much of the town centre has been designated as conservation areas. Outside the town centre there are conservation areas based on the historic village cores of Wilnecote, Dosthill and Amington and the Amington Hall Estate parkland.

We would like your views on our proposed approach and policies for the new local plan:
As a historic market town its heritage is an important part of the town’s identity, so it’s important to protect that heritage for future generations to enjoy. The new local plan will look to do this in a meaningful way through a philosophy of managing change rather than resisting change. This means being flexible where appropriate around things like how listed buildings are used, and allowing innovative design of new development, whilst still reflecting the existing character of the town.
The proposed approach will be reflected in the policies that will be used to assess planning application for work that could have an effect on Tamworth’s heritage. A summary of each of the policies we think should be in the plan is set out below.
