Sport, Leisure and Recreation
Although Tamworth is a compact borough, it benefits from a broad range of sport, leisure and recreational facilities that support the health, wellbeing and quality of life of residents. These include playing fields, leisure centres, indoor sports facilities, parks, informal open spaces, walking and cycling routes, and areas used for casual and organised recreation.
Sport and recreation play a key role in supporting active lifestyles, improving physical and mental health, reducing health inequalities and strengthening community cohesion. They also contribute to wider objectives such as green infrastructure provision, climate resilience and sustainable transport.
As Tamworth continues to change over the plan period, it is important that existing facilities are protected, that new and improved provision is delivered where needed, and that development contributes appropriately to meeting demand. Ensuring opportunities for sport, leisure and physical activity are accessible to all sections of the community is a key consideration for the new local plan.

Proposed local plan policies on sport, leisure and recreation
The proposed approach will be reflected in planning policies used to assess development proposals that may affect sport, leisure and recreational provision. A summary of the proposed policy directions is set out below.
